Trend Report: Lakme India Fashion Week 2013

The recently concluded Lakme India Fashion Week, as always, brought forth a plethora of trends, many of which will rule the roost in the months to come. Featuring designers such as Ritu Kumar, Vikram Phadnis, Anita Dongre, Manish Malhotra, and Rocky S, the week concluded with a showcase of Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s stunning Lakme Absolute Royal inspired collection.

The week hinted at the return of the seventies, gave the nod to colour blocking and monochrome, promoted Indian weaves and patterns, sparkled with hints of Gatsby and embraced gold in all its opulent glory. Here are four of our favourite trends from the week.

Gold & Ivory

The trend took centre stage in Ritu Kumar and Vikram Phadnis’ collections. While the former featured ethnic wear in neutral shades of ivory and white, the latter featured gowns, dresses, and jackets that looked like molten gold. The trend is a perfect blend of drama and wearability; and is a definite do for the winter wedding season.

Colour Block

Colour blocking continues to be a big trend and will make its presence felt this fall. The versatility of this trend is its biggest strength - it can manifest in subtle pastels for a demure take on the trend or in clashing neons for something bolder. It’s a clean, fresh look that can be combined with lots of metallic accessories while working with a cooler palette, but is best accessorised minimally when it takes on deeper or brighter hues.

Neon Sarees

Also making a splash was the saree in a bright new avatar, with electric neons breathing new life into the garment. Featuring in the collections of several designers, this fun take on the traditional garment looked like it was here to stay. The colours that featured the most were hot pinks, electric blues, neon yellow and fluorescent green. Using these colours in the detailing makes for a subtler take on the trend.

Call it an after-effect of The Great Gatsby if you will, but shimmer winked its way through the week with élan – be it in the collections of Shehla Khan or Vikram Phadnis. The trend can glint demurely in the detailing of an ensemble or dominate the entire fabric of a garment.
